★★★★★Guillaume

8.7 km run today, no knee pain. First time in months.

★★★★★Philippe G.

Still running at 58 with femoro-patellar arthritis. Good grip, doesn't slip.

★★★★★Alain D.

Waiting for surgery. This takes the edge off the pain enough to live almost normally.

★★★★★Estelle L.

Lightweight, comfortable, no heat build-up. Unlike every reinforced brace I've tried.

★★★★★Michel R.

Keeps my patellar tendon in place while cycling without limiting the pedal stroke.

★★★★★Brigitte D.

Stops the strain on the patellar tendon. I walk normally again after weeks of inflammation.

Returns & refunds

Not for you? Email contact@laftya.com within 60 days of delivery, send it back, and we'll refund you. No reason needed, no form to fill in. So take it down the hill that's been beating you, and decide after that.

Materials & quality

A soft silicone pad with an 8 mm air cushion that sits under the kneecap. It is softer in the centre (Shore 20) and firmer at the edges (Shore 70), so it presses without losing its shape.

Pad: silicone, 18.5 x 5.5 x 0.8 cm, anti-slip ribs on the inside, 3D micro-grooves to let heat and sweat out

Strap: polyester hook-and-loop, adjustable length, one size

Buckles: ABS, adjustable on both sides

Made to be worn every day, not kept for good days.

Comfort & hold

Breathable fabric instead of neoprene, so there's no warm layer wrapped round your whole knee, and 3D micro-grooves in the pad let the heat out. Angled anti-slip ribs grip the skin, which keeps the strap under the kneecap instead of rolling down your shin. One size, adjustable on both sides to fit most knees.

It's the way back down that gets you.

It's the way back down that gets you.

The rail on the way down. The armchair in two goes. Asking your other half to slow down, and hating that you asked.

You've started choosing walks by how many steps there are on the way back.

Going downhill, your thigh does the braking. All that braking hangs off one tendon, two fingers below your kneecap. We call that spot the Two-Finger Point. Up to 17x your body weight can pass through it with every step.

A neoprene brace gives your calf the same squeeze it gives that tendon. And your calf was never what made you take the short way home.

Put your thumb on it and press.

Put your thumb on it and press.

Two fingers below the kneecap. Stand, press, and bend a little, as if stepping off a kerb. That tightening under your fingers is the pull.

The Laftya Knee Strap keeps a firm silicone pad on that spot, aiming to take some of it off the tendon each time your foot lands.

It's made for patellar tendonitis, runner's knee and jumper's knee, for getting back on your feet after a knee operation, and for a knee that just feels unsteady.

In 2011, Sports Health published computer models built from the knee X-rays of 20 men. With a strap below the kneecap, the modelled strain on the tendon dropped in most of them. A model of young men's tendons, not a trial on walkers of 60, and we'd rather you knew.

Pressing one spot is the easy part. Staying on it all the way back is where cheap straps give up.

Still under your kneecap at the bottom of the hill.

Still under your kneecap at the bottom of the hill.

There's a little move everyone with a cheap strap knows. Bend down, hook a thumb under the band, drag it back up your leg. At the gate. At the kerb. In the car park at the shops, with someone waiting.

For every minute it sat on your shin, it was doing nothing for your knee.

The inside of this pad has angled silicone ribs that hold the skin the way a boot tread holds wet grass. So it stays on the Two-Finger Point from the top of the track to the bottom. It stays put through 12-hour shifts and 10 km runs.

Staying put is half the job. The other half is whether you can still stand it at lunchtime.

On after breakfast. Still on after dinner.

On after breakfast. Still on after dinner.

Heat is what finishes off most knee supports. A sleeve covers you from mid-thigh to mid-shin, and on a 30-degree day that's a lot of skin with nowhere to breathe.

This covers a strip about as wide as a watch strap. Your kneecap, the back of your knee and the rest of your leg stay open to the air, and small grooves in the pad let the warmth out from underneath.

Under jeans, leggings or work trousers, you'd have to know it was there to spot it.

You might only notice it's working the day you take the long way home again.

Your questions

Why not just wear a knee brace?

A brace wraps the whole joint and squeezes all of it, so it gets hot and holds everything back a little. This strap leaves your knee free and presses on one place: the tendon two fingers below your kneecap, the Two-Finger Point. The aim is to take some of the pull off it as you walk.

I've tried braces, sleeves, the lot. Why would this be any different?

Fair question after all that. They pressed everywhere at once, the Two-Finger Point included, and no harder there than anywhere else. This presses only there. It won't regrow cartilage or cure arthritis, and we won't pretend otherwise. If it doesn't make the walk back easier, email us within 60 days for your money back.

Isn't it a bit small to make a difference?

Press two fingers into the soft spot under your kneecap. That's about the area the pad covers. A bigger pad wouldn't press that spot any harder. It would just spread the same squeeze onto skin with nothing wrong with it.

My knees aren't average. Will it fit?

It's one size. The hook-and-loop strap goes round a slim knee or a fuller one, and you set the tightness yourself each time. If it doesn't fit, the 60-day guarantee covers that too.

Will it slip down on stairs and hills?

It shouldn't. Angled silicone ribs inside the pad grip the skin under your kneecap, going up and coming down. If it creeps, it's a touch too loose: one more pull sorts it.

Can I wear it all day?

Yes. It covers a narrow band, not your whole knee, and the fabric lets air through, so it's far cooler than a neoprene sleeve. It goes under jeans, long pants or leggings. On a long sit, loosen it, and tighten it again before you head out.

Where exactly does it go?

Sit on the edge of the bed, knee bent. Lay two fingers flat just below your kneecap: the pad goes where your fingers are, on the Two-Finger Point. Pull until it's snug, not tight. If you can feel it behind your knee, ease it off a little. About 10 seconds.

And if it does nothing for me?

Then you email us within 60 days, send it back, and we refund you. If it does work, you'll probably know on the first long walk downhill.

How do returns and refunds work?

Email contact@laftya.com within 60 days of delivery. We'll reply with the return address, and once the strap is back with us we refund you. This comes on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
